About to Get Interesting

This week is an important time for two major peoples who live in my city.  For H.ndus, it is the first "day of puja (or worship)" in their several day long festival of Durga Puja.  For Musl.ms, they are getting ready for Korabani (sacrifice) Eid which is October 25th.  These religious holidays are some of the most important for both groups of people.

I live on a street in this city where the two religions seem to converge.  On one portion of the street is a dhaba (street-side restaurant) where you can buy beef biryani.  A little further down the road, you are back to chicken and mutton (goat) biryani.

Right outside my door this week is a H.ndu pundle with the goddess Durga inside it.  In the coming days scores of H.ndus will line up to worship here.

Not 100 feet away are cows tied up being fed hay to fatten them up before the slaughter.

Thankfully, it seems to be a peaceful convergence on my street between two religions that have past history of some violent and hateful encounters.  I do think it will be quite interesting to see how everyone celebrates in the midst of each other.  Somehow I think those that frown upon idol worship and those that worship a cow and think it is a god are going to have a bit of trouble when the other party worships idols all week and then the opposing view slaughters cows on Thursday.

Even our Chief Minister of this state seems to have some trouble deciding what to do:

Oh, how lost and confused these people are.  How they have been blinded and are wandering in the dark searching for truth.  Oh how they need the One, True, Only Savior.  Will you please lift up my city as it goes looking for truth in all the wrong places.  May He open the eyes of the blind.  JC Saves! JC Saves!

P.S.  I emailed a guide for lifting up the city during Durga Puja a few days ago.  If you want it and didn't get it, email me at eorre@aol.com.  Also, to aid you in lifting up Eid, you can refer to a blog I wrote last year about it.
